we made it

This is the best skyline image i have seen of Detroit our new home. the 4 bulidngs you see in the foreground I am told is called the Ren Cen or the Renesssaince Center. It is the home to GM headquarters and is a very beautiful building. Actually we are not living in metropolitan Detroit. We are living in a really fun, trendy, diverse city called Royal
Oak which is located just northwest of detroit on rout 1.
One of our new friends here Jana, was willing to let us stay in her house while we settle in and wait for our house in akron to sell. This was very generous of her and we relly like her and her house. (Thanks Jana for letting us invade your home.) Only having been here officially three days now, we have already begun to notice some uniquely Michigan/Detroit things. Here are some o f them.

1. Coney Island: This is a type of restaurant that is apparently a combination hot dogs and greek food. Oh, and they also have good breakfasts. We have been to one already and I must say the food was good. There are tons of these all over the place. It is quite interesting. And in case you did not know a Coney Dog, the namesake of these establishments, is a hot dog with chili and onions on it. hmmmmmm

2. The Land of Pita: Yes for some reason the pita sandwich is a VERY popular food option. There are many of these places (all of which we are excited to try) including The Pita Pit located just down the street from where we are living.

3. The Michigan left: I know what you are thinking, “Isn’t there only one way to turn left?” The answer is not in Michigan. On roads divided in the middle you cannot turn left at the intersection. You must go through the intersection, perform a U-turn and then take a right. While I understand that this makes traffic much less congested, it really takes a bit of getting used to. which brings me to my next item . . .

4. Traffic: There is traffic here. Not quite as bad as Chicago, but definately more than Akron or Cleveland.

5. The blinking red left turn signal: This is another one of those confusing turning left traffic odities. In Ohio if the traffic light is green and you want to turn left, you simply roll into the inersection, wait till the traffic is clear and turn. In Michigan there is a blinking red light. This simply means that you must stop at the white line then turn left once traffic is clear. Now, I under stand the logic behind this, but it really thew me when I first encountered it.

Well, that is all for now. Tomorrow is Monday and my first day on the job. I am very excited to get at it, but there are still a lot of details to work out during this transition. Melanie and I both will be sure to keep you up to date here on our blog. Till then, we love you and miss you all.

p.s. Our house in Akron is still for sale. Any buyers? : )
